What is Intense Pulsed Light (IPL)

Date: 2022.02.28
IPL(intense pulsed light) is a high-intensity,wide-spectrum,non-continous light source. Using square wave pulses and constant current charging OPT technology, a constant energy is emitted to ensure that each pulse energy emitted is the same, achieving rapid and permanent hair removal, skin regeneration, vascular and pigmented lesion treatment and acne treatment.

Intense pulsed light (IPL), or pulsed light, is a broad-spectrum light formed by focusing and filtering a high-intensity light source. Its essence is an incoherent ordinary light rather than a laser. The wavelength of IPL is mostly 500 to 1200 nm. IPL is one of the most widely used phototherapy techniques in clinical practice and occupies a very important position in the field of skin beauty. IPL is currently widely used in the treatment of various disfiguring skin diseases, especially skin diseases related to photodamage and photoaging, that is, classic type I skin rejuvenation and type II skin rejuvenation.

Type I rejuvenation: is an IPL treatment for pigmented and vascular skin diseases. Pigmented skin diseases include freckles, chloasma, sunspots, freckles, etc.; vascular skin diseases, including telangiectasia, rosacea, port-wine stains, hemangiomas, etc.

Type II skin rejuvenation: It is an IPL treatment for diseases related to changes in the dermal collagen tissue structure, including wrinkles, large pores, rough skin, and tiny concave scars left over from various inflammatory diseases such as acne and chicken pox.

          Contraindications Treatment Principles Precautions

          Indications:

Photoaging, pigmented skin diseases, vascular skin diseases, rosacea, telangiectasia, freckles, hair loss and acne. It has been reported in the literature that IPL can also be used to treat Civatte heterochromia, Lille melanosis and so on.

          Contraindications:

Epilepsy, melanocytic skin tumors, lupus erythematosus, pregnancy, herpes zoster, vitiligo, skin grafts, pioneering skin lesions at the treatment site, scarring, and genetic photosensitivity disorders such as xeroderma pigmentosum. Caution is also required when taking photosensitizing drugs or food during treatment.

          Treatment principle:

The theoretical basis of IPL treatment of skin diseases is the principle of selective photothermal action. Because IPL has a broad spectrum, it can cover multiple absorption peaks of various chromophores such as melanin, oxidized hemoglobin, and water.

1.When treating vascular skin diseases, hemoglobin is the main chromophore. The light energy of IPL is preferentially and selectively absorbed by oxyhemoglobin in the blood vessels, and converted into heat energy to warm up the tissue. When the pulse width of the light wave is smaller than the thermal relaxation time of the target tissue, the temperature of the blood vessel can reach the damage threshold of the blood vessel, which can coagulate and destroy the blood vessel, resulting in vascular occlusion and degradation, and gradually replaced by microscopic tissue to achieve the purpose of treatment.

2.IPL can improve skin conditions such as loose skin, wrinkles, enlarged pores, etc., mainly by using its biological stimulation effect. The treatment of acne mainly utilizes photochemical action and selective photothermal action.

          Precautions

1.Strictly grasp the indications, and make a clear diagnosis before surgery.

2.Large area can be treated in batches.

3.Beards, eyebrows, scalp, etc. should be treated with IPL with caution.

4.During the treatment period, unnecessary skin beauty care and fitness are prohibited.

          5.Reasonable postoperative care and maintenance.

6.Those with poor curative effect should consider other methods.

7.After exposure to the sun, you should rest for 1 to 2 weeks before treatment.
